Glucoraphanin, processing speed, and mood

Would 12 weeks of glucoraphanin intake change cognitive test results and mood in older adults?

Human · randomized double-blind controlled trial

Key findings

Difference in a processing-speed test

The mean change in symbol search (SS) score was +1.29 points in the placebo group and +1.99 in the intake group. The adjusted between-group p-value was 0.03.

Negative mood changes were also compared

Change in total mood disturbance (TMD) score was +1.60 points in the placebo group and −0.11 in the intake group. Lower scores indicate less negative mood; the adjusted p-value was 0.03.

Other test results are reported separately

There were no clear between-group differences in other cognitive tests or in oxidative stress, inflammation, and neuroplasticity markers. Urinary sulforaphane metabolites were higher in the intake group.

Study design

A total of 144 healthy adults aged 60–80 were randomly assigned to the intake or placebo group. They took 30mg of glucoraphanin daily; cognitive tests, mood questionnaires, and biomarkers were compared at baseline and after 12 weeks.

Study context

A 12-week trial examined processing speed and mood in healthy older adults. The supplement dose refers to glucoraphanin, a sulforaphane precursor.
