Key findings

Responses from 16 families

Families of 16 of the 26 participants provided follow-up information.

Experience with continued use

At follow-up, nine participants were still using supplements, and one planned to use them.

Positive experiences at the case-report level

Some families described behavioral and communication changes.

Detailed results

The study asked families how daily life changed after the trial.

A follow-up case report on some participants who took sulforaphane in the 2014 Singh trial. The researchers confirmed 2014 information through ongoing contact with families and updated some accounts through summer 2016.

Families described changes in daily life, including communication, emotional stability, going out, and shared activities. These are accounts of each family's use and observations.

Usage status based on the paper's follow-up case classifications.

Higher response rate among families of initial responders

Of 26 original sulforaphane recipients, 16 families responded. Fourteen of 17 initial improvers and two participants without improvement responded to follow-up contact. Initial responders made up a larger share of respondents.

Observations in daily life

Family observations covered communication and behavior as well as participation in daily life and caregiving experiences. The composition, formulation, and duration of commercially available material used after the trial differed between families.

Study design

After the initial controlled trial, the research team asked families about their use experiences. Their responses were compiled in a follow-up case report.
