Trial of cellular defenses and lung function in COPD

Would the cellular defense response observed in healthy people also appear in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?

Human · randomized double-blind controlled trial

Key findings

Four-week assessment of cellular defenses and lung function

In a trial of 89 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, no significant between-group differences were found in NRF2 target genes, inflammation, oxidative stress, or lung function markers.

Study design

Eighty-nine patients with COPD were divided into three groups: placebo, SFN 25μmol/day, and SFN 150μmol/day, for a four-week comparison. NRF2 target genes in bronchial and blood samples, inflammation, and lung function were evaluated.

Participants
89 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
double-blind randomized trial
Intake and observation
Sulforaphane 25 or 150μmol/day
4 weeks · placebo controlled
Measures
NRF2 target genes · lung function

Study context

Cells collected from the bronchi and blood were analyzed. This trial compared sulforaphane doses of 25μmol and 150μmol with placebo.
