Cruciferous vegetable diet and 24-hour blood pressure

Do adults with mildly elevated blood pressure have lower blood pressure on a cruciferous vegetable diet than on another vegetable diet?

Human · VESSEL randomized crossover trial

Concept image introducing cardiovascular and lipid research

Key findings

Difference in 24-hour systolic blood pressure

The cruciferous vegetable diet was associated with a mean systolic blood pressure 2.5 mmHg lower than the comparison diet (95% CI −4.2 to −0.9 mmHg; p=0.002).

Daytime blood pressure and lipids

Daytime systolic blood pressure contributed most to the difference, and a small difference in triglycerides was also reported.

Dietary effects of different vegetables

The intervention was a diet containing several cruciferous vegetables together.

Study design

Eighteen people followed each of two diets for two weeks, with 17 included in the blood pressure analysis. About 300 g/day of cruciferous vegetables was compared with root and squash vegetables, with a two-week washout between diets.

Participants
18 adults with mildly elevated blood pressure
17 in blood pressure analysis · crossover trial
Intake and observation
Approximately 300 g/day of cruciferous vegetables

Study context

Adults with mildly elevated blood pressure consumed each of two vegetable diets for two weeks in a crossover trial.
